Orbital and Lacrimal Surgery

Orbital and Lacrimal Surgery Services

At Spokane ENT, we provide evaluation and surgical care for orbital and lacrimal conditions that involve the eye–nose interface. Our rhinologists manage Graves' orbitopathy (thyroid eye disease) and orbital decompression, as well as nasolacrimal duct obstruction and stenosis. These conditions can cause excessive tearing, recurrent eye infections, eye bulging, double vision, and discomfort. We work closely with ophthalmologists and oculoplastics specialists to offer comprehensive, multidisciplinary care for patients who need both nasal and orbital expertise.

Our evaluation includes detailed history, nasal endoscopy, imaging when indicated, and when appropriate, lacrimal probing or thyroid function assessment. For nasolacrimal duct stenosis, we offer endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR), a minimally invasive procedure that creates a new tear drainage pathway from the eye into the nose. For Graves' orbitopathy, we may collaborate on orbital decompression to relieve pressure and improve vision and appearance when medical management is insufficient.

Our surgical approach prioritizes patient safety and functional outcomes. We utilize endoscopic techniques to minimize scarring and speed recovery. Our ongoing partnership with the Northwest Eyelid and Orbital Practice ensures that patients requiring combined orbital and lacrimal care receive coordinated, expert treatment from specialists in both ophthalmology and ENT.

Frequently Asked Questions

Nasolacrimal duct stenosis is a blockage or narrowing of the tear drainage system that carries tears from the eye to the nose. It can cause excessive tearing, recurrent eye infections, and mucus discharge.

Graves' orbitopathy (thyroid eye disease) is an autoimmune condition associated with thyroid dysfunction that causes eye bulging, double vision, and eye discomfort. Orbital decompression can relieve pressure when medical management is insufficient.

Endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) is a minimally invasive procedure that creates a new drainage pathway for tears from the eye into the nose, bypassing a blocked nasolacrimal duct.

Orbital decompression is considered when Graves' orbitopathy causes significant eye bulging, double vision, or optic nerve compression. It creates space in the orbit to relieve pressure.

See an ENT if you have chronic tearing, recurrent eye infections, or have been referred by an ophthalmologist for nasolacrimal duct obstruction or orbital decompression. We work closely with oculoplastics specialists for combined care.
